Stitching Sundays 2 : Just Doodling

So it's week two of Stitching Sundays linking up with Chrissie's 'Stitching Sundays'. So here's what I've been up to since last week.

My Doodle Stitching book turned up in the post this week so exciting, so I spent a afternoon looking through that, getting so many ideas of things I want to embroider.    My crafting time is quite limited, due to my health levels, so I've only been able to manage a little bit of stitching a few day this week.

As I've never done any embroidery at all before, I decided I needed to learn and practice some of the different stitches before starting on my Summerhouse Sampler.  So I cut a piece off a old linen tunic and popped it into the hoop for a bit of practice stitching, 'Doodle style'!!

No following a pattern or transfer for me, Oh no I'm a rebel I just threaded my needled with some Blue floss and I was off.

Such fun to be had trying out the different stitches, first I stitched a satin stitch circle and then some straight stitch petals for my flower followed by a few running stitches for the stalk. I then attempted to stitch a oval around my little flower, learning how to do a Split Stitch. At this point I went a bit wonky, (maybe a transfer would have been a good idea after all! ) but I didn't mind so very much for I was giddy and doodling, learning all the different stitches.

After that I added four star stitches in pink and blue floss and some green cross stitches. I also back stitched some little green leaves at the base of my flower. I added some french knots in yellow and pink, which I found a bit tricky as they kept pulling through my thin fabric. So I think i need a bit practice there.

Finally I added a green diamond in running stitch, to frame by little doodle, which is as far as I got for now. I'm planing next on learning to chain stitch by adding another border.  So that's what I've managed week, for my very fist attempt at Embroidery.

I've doodled my way to learning seven types of stitches and I've thoroughly enjoyed doing it.

So this week I'll being going back to my napkin to finish the outside border, just got one side to go now.

Why not pop over to Chrissie blog 'here' to see what everyone else has been up to.

Happy Stitching
Clare xx

  2. Love your doodling! I did exactly the same thing when I first started out - I wasn't in the mood for a proper pattern, so I just had fun playing with stitches, too! But wow, seven stitches in one go, you are quite an achiever! Can't wait to see what you get up to next, Chrissie x

  3. What a great idea to practice your stitches first. French knots can be tricky. I tighten the knot on my needle before I finish the stitch, that seems to work. Looking forward to seeing your napkin take shape.

  10. I'm just learning to embroider, too. My auntie gave me a tablecloth with a preprinted pattern on for embroidering. She was given it as a wedding present in the 1940s and completed about a third, she said if I wanted to finish it, it's mine, so I am currently woking on that. I might join in with Stitching Sundays soon!
